tournament event information

Challenge Martial Arts is pleased to present the fifth annual Kenai Peninsula Open Martial Arts Tournament on Saturday October 10, 2026. Early registration is open now, and you can click the above "Register Now!" button to register right now online. The early bird registration fee (prior to October 8) is $45, which covers a single competitor for one, two, or all three events. Alternatively, you can register at the door for $60. The $7 spectator entrance fee is payable only at the door.

This tournament is open to all "stand up" styles such as taekwondo, karate, tang soo do, kung fu, and all other styles that perform forms and/or practice point sparring. There will be divisions for open-handed forms, weapon forms and sparring. Divisions will be divided as much as possible by competitors' ages and highest attained ranks (in any style) based upon a 10-level scale. Available divisions in the tournament will depend upon the ages and ranks of those who register, so spread the word and encourage your friends to participate!

The tournament will be held at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center (click on the map at the right). Doors will open Saturday, October 10, at 9:00 AM; registration closes at 9:45 AM, and competition starts at 10:00 AM. All competitors must check in at the registration desk before 9:45 AM.

Spectators are welcome. Parents, friends, family and other spectators are welcome to attend the entire event for a door fee of $7 each with in-and-out privileges. Come watch the competition. Cheer for your favorite competitors. Enjoy martial arts demonstrations and exhibitions.

Note:  If your studio / dojo / dojang has a demo team and would like to perform at the event, contact Mr. Fritsche at Challenge Martial Arts to get your team on the schedule.

All competitors must have ID (appropriate of age), and minors must have a parent or legal guardian with them in order to compete. There will be no exceptions due to safety concerns. Adult competitors will review and sign the registration form, and minors will have the parent or legal guardian sign on their behalf. Registration fee includes entrance to the venue for the competitor.

Forms (kata, poomsae, hyung) will be judged for sharpness of movements, balance, intensity, and presentation, including speed and power, martial spirit and rhythm.

Sparring will be conducted in accordance with Challenge Martial Arts sparring rules (see document link below). These rules are based upon American Taekwondo Association (ATA) rules. Sparring will be light to medium contact only. Excessive contact will not be tolerated. Be aware that the Challenge Martial Arts studio sparring rules limit strikes and kicks to specific target areas and specific techniques, which may differ significantly from the practices of other studios. All competitors must adhere to the sparring rules given below for this competition.
